Kodokan
Judo The
Kodokan was founded in 1882 by the late Prof. Kano who himself had
established Judo. Judo
was derived from Jujitsu which had many names and schools. Jujitsu
is an art for either attacking others or defending oneself with nothing
but one's own body. Prof.
Kano adopted the superlative parts of all the Jujitsu schools, got rid
of precarious techniques, and established the new Kodokan Judo based on
his own insight and understanding. He
started with only nine disciples and a twelve-mat dojo. Kodokan
Judo was recognized in a few years to be superior because its students
overwhelmed the Jujitsu athletes at the Police Bujitsu Contest. Eventually
Judo displaced JuJutsu in Japan, and Dr. Kano was swarmed with students
from all styles of JuJutsu. |
Hamilton
Judo Club As
early as 1959, Judo Senseis like Jim Wilson and Don Links, who operated
the old Don San Judo Club on Court Street, were teaching Judo in
Hamilton. A young man named Mr. John K. Purvis began learning Judo at
this time. Officially,
the Hamilton Judo Club was founded in 1965 by Mr. Purvis. Mr. Purvis is
donned the “founder or father” of Hamilton Judo. Sensei
Purvis had
a dream of putting Hamilton on the judo map nationally; he was
responsible for importing Mr. Young Nam Chung to Hamilton, an All
Korean Champion who became the Head Instructor. In
1971 Mr. Purvis invited Mr. Chung’s younger brother , Young Jin Chung,
(who was living in Korea and who was also an All Korean Champion), to
come and join the instructional staff at the Hamilton Judo Club. Young Jin
stayed about 3 years and then opened his own judo and karate
schools
in Dayton. Mr. Chung and Mr. Purvis continued on until 1985. Current
Sensei Frank Herzog took over as head instructor in 1985. Sensei Herzog is a 6th Dan black belt in Judo, and he has several National, Inter-national, and World accomplishments to his credit.
On
March 13th 2011 The Hamilton Judo expanded itself. HJC became
a member of the North America JiuJitsu Federation....they
promoted Sensei Frank Herzog to Shichidan ,7th dan.
Also Robert J. Gerhardt to Sandan , 3rd dan.in Jiujitsu. The club is
now a Training Center, offering. Judo/ Jiujitsu and MMA. |
